did you know?
By Katarina Ilic Did you know that:
- In Ancient Rome people used to believe that the red rose became red because Jupiter accidentally saw Venus bathing. The surrounding white rose bush turned red to reflect Venus’ blush. On the other hand the ancient Greeks believed that the red rose turned red because it was stained by Aphrodite’s blood. The story goes that while Aphrodite tried to protect Adonis from Ares’ rage she pricked her foot and thus the white rose (which opened upon her birth) turned red as a result of the divine goddess’ blood dropping on them.
- Anthropological evidence suggests that early humans used to sleep standing up against cave walls.
- Gladiators often fought blindfolded. These blindfolded fighting gladiators were known as andabata.
- Tartarus is located below the underworld as far from Earth as heaven (Elysian Fields) and even gods feared Tartarus.
- If you were to stand at the centre of Stonehenge on June 21st you would see the rising sun aligned with the avenue and perfectly bisecting the stone circle.
- One reason that Japanese writing is considered the most difficult in the world is because one thing can be written three different ways.
- In Japan 3 – 5% of people represented the Samurai Class. Their swords were considered as having spirits of their own and the sword makers used to fast and be purified before beginning to work on swords.
- In 1314 and 1317 those who survived the black plague, known as Black Death, developed immunity to it. It took people five days to die from the plague.
- Today we still sing the nursery rhyme that was made up to describe the symptoms / effects of the plague:
“Ring Around the rosies, A pocket full of posies Achoo! Achoo! We all fall down.”
