German Historical Institute
Since its founding in 1987, the German Historical Institute (GHI) in Washington DC has
maintained close relations with the Conference Group for Central European History
(CGCEH). Two representatives of the CGCEH serve on the board of the “Friends of the
German Historical Institute,” founded in 1991 to support the activities of the GHI.
Likewise, a representative of the GHI traditionally delivers a report on GHI activities
at the annual CGCEH business meeting. For a number of years the CGCEH helped to fund the
Transatlantic Doctoral Seminar in German History, jointly organized by the GHI and
Georgetown University.
The German Historical Institute (GHI) was established in April 1987 as an independent
non-profit foundation. Since 2002, it is part of the Stiftung Deutsche
Geisteswissenschaftliche Institute im Ausland (DGIA), which is funded by Germany’s
Ministry of Education and Research. The GHI is dedicated to the promotion of historical
research in the United States and Germany. It supports American and German historians,
encourages cooperation between them, and also reaches out to the general public. To
further these goals, the GHI organizes conferences and lecture series, offers awards and
fellowships, maintains a research library, and publishes a semi-annual Bulletin,
reference guides, and several book series.

German History in Documents and Images (GHDI) is a comprehensive collection of primary
source materials documenting Germany's political, social, and cultural history from 1500
to the present. It comprises original German texts, all of which are accompanied by new
English translations, and a wide range of visual imagery. The materials are presented in
ten sections, which have been compiled by leading scholars. All of the materials can be
downloaded free of charge for teaching, research, and related purposes; the site is
strictly intended for individual, non-commercial use.
